Support for carers.

Caring for someone can be rewarding, but it can also be tiring, stressful and isolating. Many people do not realise they are a “carer” at first – they may simply be supporting a partner, friend, neighbour or family member who is unwell, elderly, disabled, or struggling with their mental health. If you provide regular unpaid support for someone who could not manage without your help, you are a carer and support is available.

This page provides information and signposting for carers living in Wells and the surrounding villages.

Caring can have a significant impact on physical and mental health. Carers may experience stress, low mood, exhaustion, anxiety or burnout. It is important that carers also look after their own wellbeing and ask for help when needed.

Why not come along to our weekly café for a cuppa, cake and a friendly chat. It’s a relaxed and welcoming space to meet others, enjoy some company and find out what support and activities are available locally.

Carers Support

The Somerset Carers Service provides support for unpaid carers, including advice, guidance, and information on services available locally. They can also help with carers assessments, wellbeing support, training opportunities and carers groups. If you are caring for someone and need advice or someone to talk to, this is a good place to start.

If you care for someone regularly, you can request a Carer’s Assessment from Somerset Council. This is a chance to talk about how caring affects your life and what support might help. The assessment can be done in person, over the phone, or online.

How to request one:

  • Call Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224 and ask for a Carer’s Assessment.

  • You can also contact Somerset Carers Service for guidance and support.

Mobilise (Somerset) is a free online community for unpaid carers. It provides a friendly space to connect with other carers, share experiences, and get advice and support. Carers can join virtual meet-ups called “cuppas,” access practical guides, and receive helpful emails with tips and resources. Mobilise also offers one-to-one support if you need someone to talk to, helping carers feel connected and supported even from home.

Many carers are entitled to financial support or benefits but may not be aware of what is available. You may wish to seek advice about:

  • Carer’s Allowance

  • Attendance Allowance

  • Pension Credit

  • Council Tax reduction

  • Blue Badge

  • help with managing finances and budgeting

You can get support with benefits and form-filling through organisations such as Citizens Advice.

Unpaid Carers – We Want to Hear From You

Are you an unpaid carer—someone who looks after a family member, friend, or neighbour without receiving payment?

We know that unpaid carers play a vital role in our communities, often balancing caring responsibilities with work, family life, and their own wellbeing. At WCN, we want to understand what matters most to you, and what support would truly make a difference in your day-to-day life.

That’s why we’re running a short Unpaid Carers Survey—to hear directly from carers like you.

Your feedback will help us:

  • Identify the biggest challenges unpaid carers face

  • Shape services and support that reflect your needs

  • Advocate for better recognition and resources for carers across our area

Whether you’ve been caring for years or are new to the role, your voice matters.

The survey is quick, anonymous, and open now.
